Wireguard is an still young VPN solution that has been developed as an alternative to established suppliers. The software promises to configure more easily and also be faster and more powerful. The first test reports are promising – We present the software more precisely.
- Wireguard is a modern VPN solution that promises a quick and easy application.
- He focuses on user friendship and safety by obtaining a manageable programming code.
- As an open source software, Wireguard can be easily implemented and developed in order to eliminate possible security gaps in the new software.
1. Wireguard wants to simplify VPN

Virtual private networks (VPN) are essential in the commercial and private sectors. On the one hand, you allow your own IP address to hide your own IP address, on the other hand, you establish a connection between networks, for example if you want to access the company’s network from home office.
However, if you have already treated with VPN more intensively, you know the faults that often occur with the configuration. Emphasis is generally placed on two solutions: IPSEC and OpenVPN. But the two approaches are only to a limited extent, because the configuration is often very complex and the speed of stability and connection often leaves much to be desired. Wireguard is now opposed to these problems and tries to improve them.
1.1. The base is a managed code
According to his own declaration, Wireguard is a very simple and fast VPN with a high level of security, which is based on modern cryptographic processes. Unlike other solutions, it focuses on naked essential elements in order to quickly correct the weaknesses of the code. The code was therefore deliberately maintained short and manageable. He uses a Layer 3 switch for IPV4 and IPv6.
TIPP: Wireguard is created in architecture between peers, but can also simulate a customer server architecture. You can find detailed information with configurations on the manufacturer’s side.

2. Additional development of the Windows version
Wireguard was developed by Jason A. Donenfeld and was initially published in the form of a module in the Linux nucleus. In the meantime, the VPN exists on all platforms for Windows, MacOS, BSD, iOS and Android. There is a new network driver to implement the protocol in Windows since 2019.
The current Windows version is called pre-alpha software because it is still in the development phase. The code has not yet been tested for all security aspects: you should not yet use Wireguard for sensitive data. However, developers call on all interested parties to help the subsequent development of the pre-alpha. There is a list of projects to which all users can help improve the open source protocol.
3. Installation and use

The installation and furniture of the tunnel must simply run out and be easy to configure. The VPN connection is created by the exchange of private and public keys on the customer and the server. Tunnel configurations can be imported and easily entered using a file.
If you want to test Wireguard yourself, you can download the different versions on the manufacturer’s side.
3.1. Wireguard configuration
According to the first test reports, Wireguard works very well and automatically in the background. The connection is stable and should not be activated manually, but exists gently with the server. A detailed description in German, as you can configure Wireguard yourself, can be found on the Wiki Ubuntuusers.
4. Differences and advantages
Unlike other VPNs such as IPSEC or OpenVPN on the basis of a huge source text, Wireguard makes very few lines of programming code. This facilitates the verification of the open source solution for safety gaps because weaknesses are easy to find in the code. Since the code also runs as a module in the Linux nucleus, a very good performance is obtained.
Data encryption also works with modern cryptographic methods. The connection of VPN participants is built via the public keys with which identity is linked.
The advantages of Wireguard can thus be summarized as follows:
- User comfort thanks to a simple configuration and installation
- Quick connection structure and stable connectivity
- Open Source Protocol
- Short code for a minimization of rapid errors
- High security standards with modern cryptographic procedures
